Sense of Wonder Walk: The Squishiness of Things

 A fallen tree becomes a habitat for many creatures and forms of life at IRWS.

Even as its soft rotting wood becomes a forest recycling center, a dead log is still home to many plants and animals. We'll meet fabulous fungi, slime molds, squishy earthworms, slimy slugs, salamanders, and much more. Find out why slime is important and make some slime of your own!

New England Forests Exhibit

The New England Forest Exhibit at Harvard's Museum of Natural History

The Harvard Museum of Natural History presents a multi-media exhibition that explores the natural history and ecology of our regional forests, their responses to human activity, and their environmental significance. Visitors are invited to explore the ecology of woodland caribou, wolves, and other wildlife of New England; learn about lichen cities that cling to rocks; and the circle of life within and around a forest pond from tiny aquatic insects to giant moose.

Afterschool at Joppa: Early Birds!

This Afterschool Session at Joppa Flats focuses on red winged blackbirds

Come to Joppa Flats after school to learn about song birds! Our afternoon starts off with self-guided activities, challenges, or puzzles that lead us to our topic for the day. As a group, we'll observe, investigate, and compare wildlife, their adaptations, and the changes that they undergo each season. Participants may play the role of a zoologist, a naturalist, or even an Arctic explorer throughout this series. Each experience will leave your young scientist eager for the next session.

Imagine, Sing, & Learn 4A: Duck, Swan, Goose!

Kids will learn about swan ducks and geese at Mass Audubon's Jopp Flats Center

Preschoolers will Imagine, Sing the Learn about water fowl and swans! This parent/child program is designed for the creative, curious, and active preschooler. Each 90-minute session offers a structured series of activities including original songs, movement, dramatic play, hands-on science, and a thematic snack. You'll receive coloring pages, song lyrics, vocabulary, a fun fact sheet, and a suggested reading list in an electronic goody bag!

Appleton's April Vacation Farmhands Crew

Join the farmhand crew to work along side the staff at Appleton Farms.

Calling volunteers ages 13 and up! Join the farmhand crew to work along side our staff and gain first hand experience with our milking herd, our calving season and our seeding and planting season for the Communtiy Supported Agriculture program.  This crew will dig in and have plenty of fun on the farm, while helping our busy farmers prepare for summer!

An early-spring evening tantalizes all the senses. You can watch woodcocks spiraling high into the fading light and hear spring peepers chorusing from the wetlands, while the smell of moist earth permeates the air. Join us for an evening of outdoor exploration during which we will put all our senses to the test. We will begin indoors with activities designed to heighten our senses of touch and smell, and then hit the trails for a short night hike to listen for the hoots of owls and see if breath mints really spark when you bite them in the dark!

Finding Fishers

Fisher cats are cute, elusive and dangerous!  Find out all about them at IRWS!

Do fishers really fish? Why do some people call them fisher "cats"? Find answers to these questions and more as we take a look into the life of this crafty predator. We will begin our program by observing a fisher mount and learning about its life history. Then we'll hit the trails in search of fisher signs. Once we find a trail, we'll follow it to see if we can find a fisher food cache or perhaps a fisher itself!

Kidleidoscope at Breakheart Reservation

Kidleidoscope is a program designed for preschoolers at Breakheart Reservation in Saugus Massachusetts
