Take a night hike with your family and enjoy the wonder of the Perseid Meteor Shower at Castle Hill with the Trustees! This is a late-night stargazing adventure for the whole family! The Perseids meteor shower is one of the main celestial events of the summer, with peak meteor viewing at up to 60 per hour! Join us for a hike along the Beach – and bring a blanket so you can stretch out on the sand for optimal viewing. We’ll keep our energy up with s’mores and lemonade around a bonfire. Pre-registration is required.

A Friday for Fireflies

Hunt for fireflies with the Trustees at the Crane Estate in Ipswich Massachusetts!

An evening adventure for the whole family! Join us for a hike down the Cedar Point trail to the Pine Grove. We’ll look for the flash of fireflies in the fields that stretch to the marsh, along the fringes of the woods that line the trail to the Pine Grove, and in the dark of the Pine Grove itself. Did you know that different species of fireflies have different flash patterns? We’ll try to differentiate between our bioluminescent buddies and count how many different species of fireflies live around the Crane Estate. We’ll finish our evening observations with s’mores around a campfire in the Pine Grove!

Enjoy the morning at Pavilion Beach in Ipswich during low tide and discover the living wonders of the sandy coastline. We will walk across the shoreline of Little Neck, where we will search for tiny fish, hermit crabs, periwinkles, and other sea creatures living in this delicate habitat. Art & the Landscape: Alicja Kwade: TunnelTeller at the Crane Estate in Ipswich Massachsuetts

Berlin-based contemporary artist Alicja Kwade (b.1979, Poland) has long been engaged with value systems, philosophical questions about the essence of reality, and with attempting to examine, if not resolve, issues of inherently subjective concepts such as space and time. In her sculptures, as well as installations, photographs, and films, Kwade occupies herself with the structural properties of everyday objects and questioning the veracity of matter, revealing possibilities for alternate realities, while examining social agreements and supposed truths.

Join Appleton Farms for oem fun on the farm! Have you ever collected warm eggs from the chicken coop or seen how fast sheep will run for their morning helping of grain? Join us for our NEW weekend Hay Bale Hangout and spend the day at Appleton Farms. Stop by for fantastic farmyard meet and greets! Hands on activities start at 10AM and run every ½ hour. Greet the goats, make a wool bracelet, cuddle a calf, farm story time, collect chicken eggs and more! In between activities hang out in the Carriage Barn and explore our all-day learning stations or picnic outside in the Stone Paddock!

Snakes Alive! Snake Hunt & Live Snake Show

Hunt for snakes with Rick Roth of the Cape Ann Vernal Pond Team!

The Trustees of Reservations hosts an afternoon of fun herpetology at Castle Hill on the Crane Estate with Rick Roth of the Cape Ann Vernal Pond Team! We’ll start with a hunt for local snake species around the Crane Estate, looking under logs and around the stone walls that lace the property. Capture will be strictly catch and release! We’ll then make our way to the Barn where Rick Roth, founder and executive director of the Cape Ann Vernal Pond Team and local snake expert, will present "Snakes of New England and the World." Rick cares for over 100 snakes of all different species -- even if we don’t find any slithering friends on our hunt, there will be plenty of snakes to see and learn about during the show.

Celebrate Spring with a  delightful evening of concerto favorites performed at the beautiful Crane Castle with music by Mozart, Haydn, Caliendo and Handel.  The Orchestra on the Hill will perform feature presentations by renown soloists from the North Shore area. As a special tribute to our gifted young musicians in Ipswich, we will feature youth cello soloist winner, Tessa Devoe.
