Ice Age Trail Hike

This moraine boulder at Ravenswood was depostied by a retreating ice sheet.

Forces of nature formed Ravenswood’s landscape. Thousands of years ago ice chunks from melting glaciers created kettle ponds, bogs, and swamps. As a matter of fact, most of New England was buried under an enormous ice sheet that was more than a mile thick!

As the ice melted the ice sheet deposited rocks and soils over the Cape Ann granite, leaving boulders at irregular intervals and forming a long, low hill. On this guided walk, we’ll take a closer look at Ravenswood’s geology and what the glaciers left behind, and learn about the causes of ice age cycles.  You'll get an up close look at the evidence and walk away with a better understanding of the forces of nature that created the environment that we all live in today.
