Salt the Humpback Whale

Salt the inflatable humpback whale at the Salem Maritime National Historic Site

Celebrate World Oceans Day with Salt! Salt is a real humpback whale who spends her summer in the waters off Massachusetts and is among the most famous whales in the world today. She was first seen in the mid 1970s here in Massachusetts Bay and has been seen just about every year since. Explore inside a 40 foot inflatable replica of Salt and learn about her and her whale family-she has had at least ten calves since researchers started studying her. The Story of 'Inland' - Meet the Author

Sawyer Free Library invites you to a reading from [amazon 978-0945980926 inline] by the author Lisa Capone. Dale Brown of the Whale Center of New England will be there as part of the presentation. Discuss this true story of a North Atlantic Humpback whale's autumn spent close to shore in Salem Sound, the people that interacted with her and her journey south that ended in her death off of the Virginia coast.  Inland's skeleton is now on display at the Whale Center of New England, and has been used as a teaching aid in whale anatomy for thousands of visitors!
