The St. Peter's Fiesta, Gloucester's annual salute to its fishermen, religious celebration, and five-day carnival and family fun fest — swings into gear Wednesday, June 27, 2012. The festival is sponsored by the Italian-American fishing community of Gloucester.
Families attending the festivities in Gloucester will find lots to do and see including concerts, parades, boat and foot races, amusement rides, a youth dance, a children’s Piñata contest, and the famous 'Greasy Pole Contest'. Kids can participate in some of the traditional events like an egg toss, blueberry pie eating contest and a pinata smash!
The entire Italian-American section of Gloucester decorates with flags, bunting, colored lights and streamers. Some fifty archways are erected over the streets, their colored lights presenting an awe-inspiring sight when viewed at night. An enormous altar and double bandstand several stories high form the focal point of the decorations. The life-sized statue of St. Peter is centered on this altar, lavishly decorated with hundreds of flowers. From the bandstand two concert bands alternate in entertaining every evening of the Fiesta.
It's a fun, safe tradition for families to enjoy.
