Glen Urquhart School Welcomes Dave Provost as New Head of School

Glen Urguhart School, Beverly MA

The Glen Urquhart School welcomed David Provost as the institutions next head of school on July 1, 2012. Provost is the sixth head of the K - 8 school in Beverly, which will celebrate its 35th year of operation this year.

Provost received his B.A. from Union College and his M.Ed. from Lesley University. His experience in independent schools goes beyond his last position - as head of school at the Nantucket New School for eight years - having previously served as a classroom teacher and in various administrative roles. He is also a professional musician and a performer who loves to share his music with the school community and beyond.

Provost began his career in education in 1988 as an English teacher at St. Andrew's School in Barrington, Rhode Island. He served as assistant head of the Pennfield School in Portsmouth, Rhode Island from 1993-98. He then moved west to Santa Barbara, California and served for five years as the middle school head at Crane Country Day School. After returning to the east coast, he assumed his first head of school role in 2003 as the interim head at Quest Montessori School in Exeter, Rhode Island. From there he moved to the Nantucket New School, where he has served for eight years as the head of school./p>

During his 24 years in independent schools, Provost has endeavored to vigorously pursue his own education and professional development, earning a Master's degree in education from Lesley University and also taking advantage of the rare opportunity to study English literature at Oxford University in 1995. He also completed a fellowship at the Klingenstein Center at Columbia University in 2006.

Certain topics have been of special interest to Provost, including the mindfulness practice in education, young adolescent development, performance assessment in middle school, and sustainability issues in small, independent schools. As co-founder of the National Small Schools Conference, he has maintained strong partnerships with colleagues in schools around the country and abroad.

Glen Urquhart is pleased to welcome Dave Provost and his family to the North Shore and to Glen Urquhart, an independent, K-8 day school in Beverly Farms.
