Boston Celtics' forward Jeff Green will speak at Glen Urquhart School on Tuesday, September 24, at 7:30 PM. The event is open to the public. No pre-registration. Tickets will be sold at the door for five dollars per person. Children under 12 are free.
A native of Maryland, Green is a graduate of Georgetown University, where he was named Most Outstanding Player of the NCAA East Regional and Big East Player of the Year, along with receiving Big East Tournament MVP honors. As co-captain, Green led Georgetown in scoring. Since that time, Green has emerged as one of the leading players for the Boston Celtics, one of the oldest teams in the NBA.
Perhaps Green's biggest achievement to date is overcoming a life-threatening heart condition. At the age of 26, he learned that he had an aortic aneurysm, a diagnosis that required open-heart surgery and could be fatal. Green was forced to miss the entire 2011ñ2012 NBA season.
Green admits that it was difficult to stop his career and put everything on hold, but he was determined to remain positive and make the most of the situation. “I am a living testament that you can bounce back from anything and you can succeed, even after a setback like I had,” states Green, who has become an integral part of the future of the Celtics.
Green says he is motivated not only by basketball. He believes in the importance of education and wants to inspire others who have obstacles to overcome. “I've had plenty of opportunity to be inspired. Plenty of little kids have gone through this before me. It works both ways,” said Green, who works with the American Heart Association and children all over the country who are dealing with heart ailments.
